In a rematch of last year's WIAA Division 7 football championship game, the Cardinals trailed for the first-time all season. But Eleva-Strum responded with 31 unanswered points as the Cardinals crushed Gilman 41-14 Saturday to earn a trip to Madison for the second year in a row.
The Pirates, defending Division 7 state champs jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a pair of three-yard touchdown runs by running back Jason Kulesa.
Trailing for the first time all season, Eleva-Strum marched down the field at the end of the quarter and Levy Cleasby's touchdown tied the game at 14-14. With time running out in the half, the Cardinals ran a fake field goal to perfection, as Lance Rongstad hit Nick Rogness in the end zone for a 21-14 halftime advantage.
In the second half, NIck Zander added a six-yard touchdown run, and Rongstad added another as the Cardinals ended the game with 34 unanswered points.
Eleva-Strum (13-0) will play Southwestern (9-4) for the Division 7 State Championship Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at Camp Randall Stadium.
