Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team Wins Season Opener

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team (1-0) opened the 2007-08 season with a 83-55 win over Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne. Behind 25 points from sophomore Trevon Hughes and 24 points and 13 rebounds from senior Brian Butch, the Badgers overcame an 11-point deficit in the first half to open their season with a win for the sixth-straight year.

With the win, the Badgers extended their home winning streak to 23 games, and head coach Bo Ryan is now 92-5 inside the Kohl Center.

The Badger defense held the Mastodons in check, forcing 18 turnovers and holding them to only 34.5 percent from the field. UW outscored the Mastodons 45-23 in the second half after holding only a six-point lead at the break. Wisconsin also dominated the inside game, outscoring IPFW 56-20 in the paint.

Hughes set career highs in points (25), assists (5), steals (6), minutes (34) and tied a career high in rebounds (5). Butch notched his eighth career double-double, while freshman Jon Leuer tallied five points and two assists in his Badger debut.

IPFW was led by freshman Ben Botts who tallied 14 points in his college basketball debut. Jaraun Burrows added 12 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.

The Badgers next host the America’s Youth Classic Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 15-17. The Badger host Savannah State, Florida A&M and Colorado. Game times are set for 8 p.m. on Thursday and then 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
