The Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team lived up to its top ranking in the state as they blew out Park Falls/Phillips 11-0, and Chippewa Falls flew by the North High Huskies 5-2 Thursday night in a pair of WIAA Regional Finals at Hobbs Ice Center.
Memorial took advantage of a short-handed Park Falls/Phillips co-op team that only dressed 12 players. The Old Abes scored three times in the first period, and seven in the second stanza, six of those goals coming in the last six minutes of the period. Memorial is now 21-0-0 on the year and will play Rice Lake in the sectional semifinals Tuesday night.
In the first game, Chippewa Falls used a late flurry in the first period to build a two-goal advantage, thanks to tallies from Mike Darley and Mitch Kurkowski. North stormed back in the second with a pair of power play goals in just over a minute from Scott Roscoe and Derek Lund. But the Cardinals took the lead for good late in the second with a breakaway goal from Jesse Laforest. Chi Hi tacked on two more as the Cards advance to play the winner of the Altoona-Lakeland game Tuesday night in another sectional semifinal.
