The filly Eight Belles finished second behind favorite Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby, then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.

Eight Belles' visibly upset trainer Larry Jones says "there was no way to save" the horse, who was trying to become the fourth filly to win America's most famous race.

Jones scratched Eight Belles out of Friday's fillies-only Kentucky Oaks for a chance to beat the boys in the Derby. The horse even drew the support of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Seconds after the finish as the field of 20 horses was galloping out around the first turn at Churchill Downs, Eight Belles suddenly went down on both front legs and jockey Gabriel Saez slid off. Even though Eight Belles finished four and three-quarter lengths back of winner Big Brown, Jones said she ran "the race of her life."

Because of the severity of her injuries, Eight Belles was euthanized on the track.
