EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – No. 14 UW-Stevens Point scored a touchdown and added an extra point with six seconds left in the game to defeat the UW-Eau Claire football team 21-20 today at Carson Park.
The Blugolds led all the way through the first three quarters but Stevens Point tied it up at 14-14 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Jared Jenkins caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Jared Beckwith and Ryan Graboski added the extra point to tie it up.
It was not until there was less than 30 seconds left in the game when both teams scored two quick touchdowns. Cory Sartorelli (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./North) put the Blugolds back into the lead with 28 seconds to go after a 10-yard touchdown run. Craig Kolb (Jr.-Marshfield, Wis.) then missed the extra point after the Pointers got a hand on it and the score remained 20-14 in Eau Claire’s favor. The drive itself lasted only 34 seconds and five plays over 57 yards.
On the next drive, the Pointers ended up with great field position after a face mask penalty by the Blugolds on the kick off, starting their drive at the Eau Claire 46. It took only three plays and 18 seconds for the Pointers to tie it back up at 20 with Beckwith connecting with Jenkins for the third time today. After a successful PAT, the Pointers took their first lead of the game at 21-20.
Despite the loss, Sartorelli once again had a good day for the Blugolds. He scored all three of Eau Claire’s touchdowns, two on the ground and on in the air. Sartorelli found the end zone for the Blugolds on the first play of the second quarter. With Kyle Paulson (Jr.-Amery, Wis.) being chased by three defenders, he made a pass across the field to Sartorelli, who was wide open and walked it in. Kolb tacked on the extra point which gave the Blugolds a 7-0 lead. On Sartorelli’s second touchdown, a block by Paulson down field sprung him, allowing him to go 43 yards after making some great cuts to find the open field. For the day he finished with 155 yards on 31 carries and 67 yards on four receptions.
Paulson led the Blugolds in passing with 262 yards completing 24 of 40. Brett Schreiner (Jr.-Somerset, Wis.) caught six passes for 64 yards, while four other Blugolds finished the day with 25 or more receiving yards. Eau Claire finished with 428 yards of total offense.
Stevens Point came up with 291 yards of offense, including 246 yards through the air and only 45 yards on the ground. Beckwith finished 19-for-30 in passing, with 246 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Ferron led the Pointers with 23 carries for 66 yards and Jenkins caught 12 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns.

Wicklund also came up with an interception and a tackle-for-loss. The Blugolds also recorded two sacks on the day with Matt Ebner (Sr.-Mindoro, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) picking up one and Andrew Evanoff (Jr.-Plover, Wis./SPASH) and Bill Albert (Fr.-Reedsburg, Wis.) splitting another.
