Two of the top high school football teams in Western Wisconsin during the regular season are still going strong in the WIAA playoffs, as both Eau Claire Regis and Chippewa Falls McDonell will take the field for Level 3 of the postseason this weekend.

Following their win over No. 1 seed Bangor last weekend, the Ramblers will host Fennimore this Saturday for a Division 6 state quarterfinal matchup. Head coach Bryant Brenner's squad has been tough to stop on both offense and defense, success he believes starts with having a disciplined, veteran team.

"You get into the playoffs and everyone is good," Brenner said. " It probably comes down to who makes the least mistakes, turnovers, penalties, who can create their own breaks and turnovers, staying disciplined, believing in what you do, and pretty soon good things will happen. We try to preach that to the kids, and hopefully that pays off in the game."

Brenner also says the team mentality his squad takes into every game has helped Regis post a 10-1 mark thus far.

"It's a direct reflection of the program we're trying to run," Brenner said. "One kid carries the ball, gets his name in the paper, it's the other ten guys blocking and getting the job done.

"To play this game, you have to be unselfish, and our offense really goes hand in hand with that philosophy."

Saturday's state quarterfinal appearance will be the second in three seasons for Chippewa Falls McDonell, a team looking to move on to Level 4 for the first time ever with a win over Frederic.

Heading into the season, the Macks had high expectations for themselves, an attitude head coach Todd Brown believes has fueled one of the best offenses in the area.

"With us being multi-dimensional, it makes it tough for teams like them that don't see many passing teams to defend the pass and the run, " Brown said. "We really felt we could make a deep run this year, a lot of guys returning with a lot of experience."

"Our conference we play in helps us with competition we face, got more depth, pieces to the puzzle at the receiver position, strengthen our defense, so we felt like we could make a deep run, get the kids to believe it themselves."
