The UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. The victory gave the Pointers the WIAC regular season and tournament sweep for the second consecutive season.
The first half showcased a defensive struggle, as both teams failed to record a goal. Pointer goalkeeper Liz Hunter tallied three saves in the first half and her counterpart Emily Kidd stopped four Pointer shots as well. The teams headed into halftime at a 0-0 deadlock.
The Pointers struck midway through the second half to gain the one goal advantage at the 65:55 mark. Jackie Spees, who was honored as UW-Stevens Point’s only senior in the pregame festivities, powered her shot attempt passed the drawn out Kidd for her 10th goal of the season, pushing the score to 1-0.
The Pointer defense remained stellar for the remainder of the game as they allowed only one shot-on-goal from the Blugolds offense.
