Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning of the second contest, and the wind starting to kick up in advance of the rain, Nick Klaren (So, North St. Paul, Minn) put Stout (17-16, 8-10) ahead with a grand slam to left field. The Eagles (14-13, 6-8) came back to tie the game in the seventh with a single run, but Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) put Stout ahead for good with a two-run double in the bottom half of the seventh.
Greg Smolinski (Fr, Menasha) got Stout on their way to a six-run eighth with a lead-off, first pitch home run to left center. Mike White (Jr, Rochester, Minn) drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Maier gave Stout a 12-4 lead with a three-run home run to the right field swamp.
The Eagles did make the rainy ninth inning interesting, scoring three runs.
Rob Heller (Sr, La Crosse) got the win, scattering 12 hits, but allowing only four runs, three earned. Maier was 3-for-5 with five RBI.
In the opening game, La Crosse scored all seven of their runs after two outs. The Eagles got three runs in the first inning before Stout put a single run on the board in the third. The Eagles took a 6-1 lead with three runs in the fourth, then added another run in the fifth.
Stout took advantage of inconsistent relief pitching by the Eagles in the eighth inning, scoring three runs. Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) got an RBI with a bases-loaded walk, and Luke Schultz (Sr, Menomonie) drove in a run with the bases loaded when he was hit by a pitch.
Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
