Packers Go With Defense With 1st Round Draft Pick

The Green Bay Packers passed on their major areas of need today, taking Tennessee defensive tackle Justin Harrell with the 16th pick during the first round of the N-F-L draft.

The selection was something of a surprise pick for the Packers, who could have taken a tight end, wide receiver or safety to address a more pressing need -- or traded down to pick up more choices.

Harrell played through a painful ruptured left biceps tendon injury in the Volunteers' game against Florida early last season before sitting out the rest of the year because of the injury.

But he should solidify the middle of the Packers' interior defensive line.

The Packers had a chance to pick Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Not doing so can be considered a vote of confidence for Packers backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the team's first-round draft pick in 2005 and heir apparent to Brett Favre.

Cal running back Marshawn Lynch, a potential target for the Packers going into the draft, was taken by the Buffalo Bills with the Number 12 pick.
