Sox Knock Off Twins 6-3

Ortiz gave up four runs to the White Sox in the first inning which helped spark Chicago to a 6-3 victory over the Twins at the Metrodome.

Trouble found Ortiz (3-3) right away as he gave up back-to-back singles to lead off the game. Ortiz would give up two more hits in the inning and walked two more batters, including one with the bases loaded. The right-hander faced nine hitters in the first inning, throwing 28 pitches.

Despite the high number of pitches after the first, Ortiz still managed to work a total of six innings. After giving up the big inning right away, Ortiz then retired the side in four of his next five innings, but it was in the fifth that he once again ran into problems.

Ortiz gave up one run in the inning on a Rob Mackowiak broken-bat single, but then faced a bases-loaded situation with two outs. It appeared that he would give up even more runs as Juan Uribe delivered a bullet to center field that was carrying over Torii Hunter's head. But the Gold Glove center fielder made yet another one of his spectacular grabs, reaching out for the ball while falling hard on his tailbone and somehow managing to hold onto the ball.

After being held to just one run by Chicago's rookie left-hander John Danks over the first 6 2/3 innings, the Twins offense tried to repeat its late-inning rally from Tuesday's victory. With two outs in the eighth, the Twins delivered three straight singles off right-hander Mike MacDougal. It was on the third single, which came of the bat of Hunter and extended his career-high hitting streak to 23 games, that Sox shortstop Juan Uribe recorded a throwing error that allowed two runs to score and made it a 6-3 game. A walk to Michael Cuddyer put the tying run at the plate for the Twins, but Justin Morneau struck out swinging to end the threat.
