Express Drop Second Straight

The Eau Claire Express punched out 10 hits, but could not get enough runners across the plate as the La Crosse Loggers defeated the Express Monday night by a score of 4-2 at Copeland Park.

The Express fall to an overall record of 1-4 this season. The Loggers improve to 4-1 overall and are currently tied with the Wisconsin Woodchucks at the top of the South Division. The Express have now lost four straight at Copeland Park and are just 8-17 all-time against La Crosse.

The Express sent Rodney Wodson (Alabama-Birmingham) to mound after the scheduled starter Elliott Ogawa (Georgia Tech) came down with food poisoning. The Loggers got to Wodson early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first run of the game came when Jim Viscomi attempted to steal third and the Express threw the ball away into left field, which allowed Viscomi to score. Then with two outs after a hit batsman, Evan Bigley hit a two-run home run to give La Crosse a 3-0 lead.

Eau Claire cut into the La Crosse lead in the top of the third when Mickey Fadness (UW-Oshkosh) scored all the way from first after an error by the shortstop and nobody covered home plate. The Loggers got that run back in the bottom of the fourth when Viscomi hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Spencer Lucian to make the score 4-1.

The Express put runners at the corners in the top of the sixth, before the rains came and the game was delayed for 50 minutes because of the rain and lightning in the area. When play resumed Nick Wichser (UW-Milwaukee) hit a double to right field that plated Pat Colwell (San Diego State) to cut the Loggers’ lead to 4-2. The Express however stranded runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings as La Crosse went on to win 4-2.

Wodson (0-1) got the loss for the Express, while Victor Black picked up the victory. Don Erdall earned his fourth save of the season for La Crosse.

Both teams will go at it again Tuesday night at Copeland Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
