Express Shutout Again

The Express have now lost two straight games after winning two in a row and fall to a record of 5-8. The Loggers improve to 7-6 this season and have now won five of the last six games over the Express.

The first five innings of tonight’s game were uneventful. The Express went with Adam Worthington (Illinois-Chicago) on the mound. Worthington in his first appearance with the Express went six innings allowed just two hits and had eight strikeouts, while walking just one batter. He would however, give up one run and that would cost him the loss.

La Crosse got that run in the top of the sixth. After a leadoff walk, the Express would throw the ball away on a pickoff attempt. Then with two outs, Trevor Coleman hit a single to right that scored Kyle Van Dusen from second to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. La Crosse got an unearned run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Michael Brenly. They got another unearned run in the eighth on an infield groundout by Jesse Hart to make the score 3-0.

That is all Brad Holt would need as held the Express to five hits, while striking out nine to earn the complete game shutout. The Express did get runners on base on Holt, who pitched in the mid to low 90’s for much of the night. However, they wouldn’t get the big hit as they left a season-high 10 runners on base.

Worthington falls to 0-1 for the Express, while Holt picks up his first win of the season at 1-2. Kole Calhoun (Yavapai) led the Express at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double.

Both teams will face each other again tomorrow, this time at Copeland Park in La Crosse. Game time for that game is 7:05 p.m.
