Staidl helps push Blue Devil men past Warriors

Nathan Staidl (Sr, Lena) made his presence known in the final minute of the game and spearheaded an 82-80 win at Lewis-Clark State College Monday.
With the score tied at 76-76 with just under a minute remaining in regulation, Staidl drew an offensive foul to get the ball back, then drained the go-ahead bucket, 78-76, with 32 seconds left.
Jordan Nelson (So, Maple Grove, Minn) collected the rebound off a Tanner Macintosh missed 3-pointer, then was fouled. Nelson missed both free throws, but got the rebound off the second miss in a scrum on the top of the key.
Staidl was fouled on the inbound, then made the first of two free throws with 18 seconds left. Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Sr, Anoka, Minn) snagged the rebound, and put the shot up. Mahlon Thomas (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) grabbed the miss and dunked the put-back to give Stout (5-7) an 81-76 lead.
Lewis-Clark (8-5) made one of two free throws and Eric Hostetter (Jr, Stillwater, Minn) was fouled on the rebound. Hostetter made the second shot with five seconds left and Lewis-Clark hit a 3-pointer as time ticked off.
Enerson-Matthews led Stout with 21 points and notched five 3-pointers. Hostetter added 14 points, Jerrod Buchholtz (Jr, Durand) 12 points and Staidl finished with nine points. The Blue Devils shot 31-of-71 (43.7 percent) from the floor, 9-of-22 (41 percent) from 3-point range and 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the line.
The Warriors' Marcus Monroe led all scorers with 28 points and three players scored 11 points each. The Warriors shot 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) from the floor, 9-of-18 (50 percent) from beyond the arc and 25-of-77 (76 percent) from the free throw line. The Warriors did commit 21 turnovers. Stout had 15 turnovers, but only five in the second half.
Stout will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 5 when they travel to UW-River Falls to resume conference action. Stout will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 9.
