The Express improve to a record of 7-9 this season and once again split the two-game series with Rochester. The Express were winless in their previous nine chances at Mayo Field and had lost the last six games overall against the Honkers. Rochester falls to a record of 8-8.
The Express got on the board in the top of the third when Joe Bonfe (Creighton) hit a solo home run to the opposite field to make the score 1-0 Eau Claire. It was Bonfe’s second home run of the inning.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when Rochester’s Drew Hoisington hit a solo blast of his own to tie the game at 1-1. The Express took the lead in the top of the eighth. Kole Calhoun began the inning with a double. Then after a groundout advanced Calhoun to third he would score on a wild pitch to give the Express a 2-1.
Calhoun then delivered defensively as with two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, he would make a diving catch to end the inning and keep the Express ahead. Calhoun then came in to save the game in the ninth and with a runner on second he would strikeout the final batter as the Express hung on to a 2-1 victory.
Wes Simmons (Nebraska) (1-1) earned the win on the mound allowing just one run on six hits and seven strikeouts in eight innings. This season Simmons has allowed just two earned runs in 20.1 innings. Calhoun earns his fifth save of the season.
The Express will now make the trek to Battle Creek, Mich. to face the Bombers for a two-game series. Tomorrow’s game begins at 4:05 p.m. local time.
