The win gives the Express an 8-9 record and Eau Claire is now 3-1 in this seven-game road trip after winning back-to-back games. The Bombers drop their third straight game and now have a record of 6-11.
Both teams had to travel from games in Minnesota last night to the game in Michigan today. The Express, however, didn’t seem to be bothered by the travel early as they would score in the top of the first. Jonathan Merritt (Alabama-Birmingham) began the game with a double. After a sacrifice moved him over to third, Devin Lohman (Long Beach State) drove in Merritt with a single to make the score 1-0 Express.
Battle Creek tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth. John Delaney would be standing at second after he was hit by a pitch and then sacrificed over. A wild pitch then got away from the Express and Delaney scored all the way from second to tie the game. The Bombers took the lead in the fifth on a bomb over the left field wall by Nick Jowers to make the score 2-1.
Eau Claire came back in the sixth after newbie David Cales (Illinois Chicago) led off the inning with a single and then reached second on a Bombers error. Kole Calhoun (Yavapai) knocked in Cales from second on a single up the middle to tie the game 2-2. Dominic Piazza (Nebraska) then drove in Calhoun with a single of his own to center to give the Express a 3-2 advantage.
Eau Claire added some insurance in the seventh when with the bases loaded, Calhoun hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Devin Lohman to make the score 4-2. Battle Creek got a run in the eighth, but Calhoun came in the game in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning as the Express won 4-3.
Shane Dyer (New Mexico) (2-1) received the win on the mound going eight innings and allowing just five hits. Calhoun picked up his sixth save of the season. The Express left a season-high 12 runners on base, but still got enough runners across to earn the win.
The teams will conclude their two-game series tomorrow as the first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. local time at C.O. Brown Stadium.
