The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Express, who now have a record of 12-11. Eau Claire also falls to 0-2 in extra inning games this season as they lost in 10 innings against Madison on opening night. The River Bats stay atop the North Division with a record of 15-9.
The Express got things started in the bottom of the first. David Cales (Illinois-Chicago) worked a two-out walk. Tyler Goodro (Butler CC) then singled to right to advance Cales to third. Kole Calhoun (Yavapai) then hit a hot shot right at the shortstop that he could not handle to allow Cales to score from third to give the Express a 1-0 advantage. It was the first run given up all year by River Bats pitcher Buddy Baumann.
St, Cloud responded in the top of the second. A pair of singles put runners at the corners with no outs. The Express then got Matt Fanelli at the plate on a squeeze attempt. However, with two outs Adam Yeager tripled down the right field line to give St. Cloud a 2-1 lead.
The River Bats extended their lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Adam Kampsen to make the score 3-1. Eau Claire cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a Goodro RBI single that plated Jonathan Merritt (Alabama-Birmingham) to make the score 3-2. However, the Express stranded runners at second and third in the inning.
The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth and just like two nights ago, the Express would rally. Calhoun led off with a double. A sacrifice moved Calhoun to third. Jacob Jefferies (UC-Davis) then reached on an error, to put runners at the corners. Pinch hitter Justin Uribe (UCLA) then stepped to the plate and drilled a double to right center to tie the game at 3-3. The game went to extra innings as the Express left runners at second and third.
In the 10th, Yeager singled with one out. D.J. Belfonte then hit a triple down the right field line to give the River Bats a 4-3 lead. The Express threatened in the bottom of the 10th. With one out, Cales walked. With two outs, Calhoun singled to right to advance Cales to third. Calhoun then stole second to put the winning run at second. However, the Express would strikeout to end the game as the River Bats hung on for a 4-3 victory.
Eddie Gamboa (UC-Davis) (0-1) picked up the loss for the Express, while Ryan Wrobel (3-0) earned the win. Wes Simmons (Nebraska) had eight strikeouts in eight innings in the no decision. Calhoun went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead Eau Claire at the plate.
The Express finish up their home stand tomorrow when they face St. Cloud once again at Carson Park. Game time is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
