Brewers Sign Top Draft Pick

This time, it's official.

After weeks of speculation and several published reports indicating a deal was already in place, the Brewers and top Draft pick Matt LaPorta formally came to terms Monday on a Minor League contract. LaPorta, a University of Florida product selected seventh overall in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, was to work out at Miller Park before Monday's Brewers-Astros game.

The team did not disclose LaPorta's signing bonus, but the three previous players drafted at No. 7 overall received $2.3 million to sign. LaPorta, who is represented by Scott Boras, was believed to have settled near that figure.

LaPorta was nursing a quadriceps injury at the end of the collegiate season so he will report first to the Brewers' rookie affiliate in Phoenix, but is expected to spend most of the remainder of the summer with Class A West Virginia. LaPorta, 22 and a two-time All-America at Florida, played mostly first base in his collegiate career, but will move to the outfield as a pro.

LaPorta batted .402 with 20 home runs, 52 RBIs and 55 walks during his senior season. The 6-foot-1, 214-pounder was rated the 20th-best Draft prospect by Baseball America, and MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo had him going in the sandwich picks after the first round. But LaPorta is considered an advanced hitter who could move quickly through the Minor Leagues.
