Express Lose, Cavaliers Win

The Battle Creek Bombers scored five runs in the first inning on their way to defeating the Eau Claire Express for the first time with a 7-1 victory tonight at C.O. Brown Stadium.

The three straight losses are a season-high for Eau Claire as the Express drop to a record of 12-13. The Bombers improve to a 9-16 record. The Express are now 2-1 against the Bombers this season.

The Express had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first as Jonathan Merritt (Alabama-Birmingham) would get to third, but Eau Claire was able to get him across the plate. The Bombers made the Express pay in the bottom of the first. With one out, Tony Sanchez hit a two-RBI double to make the score 2-0 Battle Creek. Then with two outs, Battle Creek had three RBI singles to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

Eau Claire scored in the top of the sixth, when Kole Calhoun (Yavapai) hit a double that scored new Express player Bryce Nimmo (Nebraska) to make the score 5-1. However, the Bombers would tack on two more runs to defeat Eau Claire by a score of 7-1.

Tim Huber (Nebraska-Omaha) (4-1) picked up his first loss of the season. Andre Benjamin (2-3) earned the win for Battle Creek. The Express gave up 16 hits, which ties a season-high.

Both teams will play again tomorrow morning in the second game of a two-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. local time.
