Triumphant on Independence Day

The La Crosse Loggers committed four errors that led to four Eau Claire Express runs and Adam Worthington (Illinois-Chicago) struck out 10 as the Express defeated the Loggers 5-1 tonight at Carson Park.

The win gives the Express a 16-17 record. La Crosse falls to a record of 17-15. Eau Claire improves to 2-1 on the Fourth of July.

La Crosse got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first when Eric Thames hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Jim Viscomi to make the score 1-0.

The Express loaded the bases with no one out in the second. It appeared that La Crosse would get out of the inning unscathed. However, a Loggers throwing error on a groundball allowed Mike LaLuna (New York Tech) and Joe Bonfe (Creighton) to score and give the Express a 2-1 lead. Tyler Goodro (Butler CC) scored in the third inning on another Loggers error to make the score 3-1 Express.

Eau Claire added to their lead in the sixth on a Jonathan Merritt (Alabama-Birmingham) RBI single that knocked in LaLuna. Merritt then scored after another La Crosse error to give the Express a 5-1 advantage.

Adam Worthington shut down the Loggers, as he would not allow a La Crosse runner past second base in his final five innings of work. Eddie Gamboa (UC-Davis) came in the game and worked a perfect ninth as the Express defeated the Loggers 5-1.

Worthington (2-1) had 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in eight innings to earn the win. Sean O’Neill (2-2) picked up the loss for the Loggers. Jonathan Merritt led the Express at the plate going 3-for-4 with a RBI.

The Express and the Loggers wrap-up the first half Thursday at Copeland Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
