Express Lose Valuable Lead in GB

The loss snaps the Express’ three-game winning streak. Eau Claire is now 1-1 in the second half and 18-18 overall. Green Bay ends a four-game losing skid with the victory and are also 1-1 in the second half and 24-11 overall.

The Express got on top of Green Bay early. Bryce Nimmo (Nebraska) was walked to leadoff the game. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a groundout. Kole Calhoun (Yavapai) then stepped in and hit a RBI single to left, scoring Nimmo. However, Eau Claire would strand the bases loaded in the first as the score remained 1-0 Express.

After the Express once again stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, the Bullfrogs tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Kurt Yacko walked. He then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a passed ball.

Eau Claire regained the lead in the sixth, when with two outs Bryan Frew (Nebraska-Omaha) hit a double to left center that scored Nimmo and Joe Bonfe (Creighton) to give the Express a 3-1 advantage. The Express added another run in the seventh when David Cales (Illinois-Chicago) hit a single down the left field line that deflected off of third base, which allowed Calhoun to score.

With a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Express would walk and hit a Bullfrog batter to put runners at first and second. Adam Frost then hit a RBI single to center to make the score 4-2. Then after a passed ball moved runners to second and third, Yacko had a single to center that plated two runs to square the game at 4-4.

After the Express went down in order in the top of the ninth, back-to-back walks began the bottom of the ninth. A base hit by Daniel Robertson then loaded the bases with one out. After a Green Bay strikeout, Eau Claire was one out away from sending the game to extra innings. However, on a 1-2 pitch Dillon Bell knocked the ball into right field to give the Bullfrogs a 5-4 come from behind victory.

Andy Yushta (UW-Parkside) (0-2) received the loss for the Express. Jeff Lombard (1-0) got the win for Green Bay. Shane Dyer (New Mexico) struck out seven through eight innings to receive the no-decision.

Eau Claire returns home tomorrow to begin a six-game home stand. The Express will face the Madison Mallards for a two-game series before the All-Star break. Tomorrow’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
