After seeing its five-game win streak come to an end last night, the Eau Claire Express bounced back with a 5-0 win tonight at Thunder Bay.
The Express improve to 7-2 in the second half and 24-19 overall. The Border Cats fall to 17-26 overall and 4-5 in the second half. The Express pick up their second win all-time at Port Arthur Stadium and are 6-5 all-time against Thunder Bay.
The Express got the scoring started in the top of third inning when Tyler Goodro (Butler CC) hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Express a 2-0 lead. Eau Claire added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Jonathan Merritt (Alabama-Birmingham) hit a RBI double down the right field line, driving in Pat Colwell (San Diego State) to make the score 3-0.
The Express finished off their scoring in the seventh inning when Jacob Jefferies (UC-Davis) hit single to right, scoring Bryan Frew (Nebraska-Omaha) to make the score 4-0. Eau Claire’s final run of the game came a batter later when Colwell singled in David Cales (Illinois-Chicago) to give the Express a 5-0 lead. The Express would pickup their third shutout win of the season as they went on to win 5-0.
Express starter Elliott Ogawa (Georgia Tech) pitched well as he got into trouble early, but worked his way out of it. Ogawa (2-1) went eight innings before handing the ball over to Peter Gehle (Bellevue) to finish the game in the ninth. Colwell had three hits to lead Eau Claire at the plate.
The Express and the Border Cats will play game two of a two-game series at Port Arthur Stadium tomorrow night. Game time is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. local time.
