In the first playoff game in Eau Claire Express history, the Green Bay Bullfrogs spoiled the party shutting out the Express 8-0 at Carson Park to take game one of the best-of-three Northwoods League South Divisional Series.
Green Bay scored in the first and never looked back. Dillon Bell would hit a chopper that bounced into right field, which allowed Ryan Cavan to score and give Green Bay a 1-0 advantage. After the Express left the runners at the corners in bottom of the first, Cavan doubled to left field in the second to drive in Daniel Robertson and Corey Ashner. Kurt Yacko got another two-out RBI in the third on a single that scored Bell to make the score 4-0.
The best scoring chance for the Express came in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out. However, Eau Claire got nothing as it grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to retire the side.
The Bullfrogs got another run in the fifth on a RBI single by Tyler Cheney to extend the Green Bay lead to 5-0. Ashner then hit a solo home run in the eighth and Danny Meier hit a two-run home run in the ninth as the Bullfrogs cruised to an 8-0 victory.
Shane Dyer (New Mexico) picked up the loss for the Express, while Taylor Sinclair earned the win for Green Bay. Ian Hollick (New Mexico) had two hits to lead Eau Claire offensively.
The Express will look to keep their season alive tomorrow night in Green Bay for game two of the best-of-three series. Adam Worthington (Illinois-Chicago) will start for the Express and Dave Roberts will go for Green Bay. Tomorrow’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Joannes Park.
