ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Biesterveld steps up for Durand

"Our offensive line is very good. It's easy to be a good running back when they create very big holes," says Durand junior, Jacob Biesterveld.

Biesterveld has become more than just a good running back for the undefeated Durand Panthers. This past weekend in the Level 1 playoffs, he not only had a rushing touchdown in their 14-0 win, he also had two interceptions.

"We've had a few injuries this year and we expect the next guy in to perform just as well as the previous guy and Jake did that," says Durand football coach, Rod Rosemeyer. "He came in and ran the ball well. He completed a pass. And obviously on defense he had a great game."

As a sophomore Biesterveld played corner, as a junior, he's basically all over the field. In fact, against Somerset he caught the game winning touchdown to help the Panthers clinch the Middle Border conference title.

"He just really stepped up as a player," says senior teammate," Cody Tomlinson. "He knows a bunch of positions and he knows how to do it well so he really pulled through for us."

"Well I'm glad he has that capability of playing both sides of the ball," comments teammate Nic Boigenzhan. "It's great next year too when all the seniors are gone that there is gonna be a leader for everyone to look up to."

"(He has) Good ball skills on defense," adds Rosemeyer. "He can judge a ball well, he tackles well. On offense he's a nice shifty runner, he's hard to tackle, and he's a pretty strong kid."

The last time the Durand program went undefeated in the regular season it was 1989, well before any of the current players were born.

"It's like a family thing we do," says Boigenzahn. "And it's just fun to be able to say I play for Durand and we're the first team since 1989 to have an undefeated conference championship title and it's kinda nice to pass down to your grandchildren."

"Our students, our fans...every time someone breaks into the open or makes a big play the crowd cheers and it's just the best feeling ever," says Biesterveld.

Durand puts their unbeaten record on the line Friday night against La Crosse Aquinas in Level 2.
