ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Blugold hockey off to a hot start

By  |

"You know I think we can skate and score with any team in the league," says Blugolds men's hockey coach, Matt Loen.

The Blugolds men's hockey roster boasts experience with 20 upper class-men, who are contributing to an offense that is averaging five goals a game.

"We've got the big tough, strong guys that will go grind it out in the corners," adds Loen, "but unfortunately we didn't have a lot of scoring the last couple of years so they've added the scoring touch for us."

"(We're) Putting pucks on net and people are burying goals, so the more that, that comes, the more goals that come, the more confident that our team becomes and the more wins that we have," comments senior defenseman David Donnellan.

The Blugolds credit their current success to the way the team has come together, including the addition of local players.

"You know after the games, there's so many familiar faces that I've grown up with around the rink," says senior forward Isaiah Bennis who played at Eau Claire Memorial. "And just seeing them after games, and playing in front of the, it's a great feeling."

"Playing in the same rink since I was a little kid so it's been fun," adds Donnellan who also played at Memorial. "Having the support of the community and my family and friends."

"Everything I've wanted and more actually," says senior forward and Eau Claire Memorial grad, Andrew McCabe. "It's a great school, academically and athletically and I've had a lot of confidence in the coaching staff coming in and I knew Coach Loen really had high aspirations for the program."

Through 10 games the Blugolds are exceeding pre-season expectations from the league...but not themselves.

"Work hard and to not feel satisfied," says McCabe. "I think we have the right tools in place and the right guys in the locker room to continue this success."
