For the first time in the history of Gordy's Athlete of the Week, we will have a repeat inductee, but they are well deserving as SportScene 13's Jenn Chapman talks to the 2013 D3 hockey national champions, the Eau Claire Blugolds.
"We had one goal in mind and that was the national tournament and to bring home some hardware," says senior forward, Jordan Singer. "And we knew with the guys coming in and the returners that we had that we had a team that we could put together and we did it."
Just weeks after Eau Claire Memorial brought home the state championship the Blugolds bring home a 5-3 victory in the NCAA Division 3, National Championship, making the city of Eau Claire, "Hockey Town."
"Just a cool tradition that we can have, see all the little kids running around too, it just creates excitement," says senior forward, Andrew McCabe. "And hockey's such a great sport and we have a very unique family here in Eau Claire and it's something we're very proud of and hopefully the tradition continues."
"Hockey's a great game. It's fun to watch live and to get all the people to get out to our games, including the high school games. And great high school hockey and now college hockey," adds head coach Matt Loen.
First team All-American and NCHA player of the year, goalie Brandon Stephenson, says Blugolds coach Matt Loen is the catalyst to their success.
"Since day one, he has been an amazing coach. In four years, he's kept a pretty tight knit group," says Stephenson. "You know he doesn't really let things go a stray and you know when times are down he pulls things up and when things are good he's right there by our sides, leading the way."
