MENOMONIE (February 1, 2013) - UW-Eau Claire's Davin Mantha scored a goal at the buzzer to lift the Blugolds to a controversial 4-3 win over UW-Stout Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
Mantha's shot came as the clock wound down to zero. Eau Claire arms went up in celebration, Stout protested the call, saying it did not beat the buzzer. The three officials huddled and after much discussion, awarded the goal and the game to Eau Claire.
Eau Claire (17-3-2, 12-2-1 NCHA, 8-2-0 WIAC) came out firing in this game, scoring three times in the first period. Jordan Singer scored at the 4:13 mark. Two minutes later, Ross Anderson scored and Kurt Weston scored at 9:34 of the first period to give the Blugolds a 3-0 lead.
Blue Devil coach Terry Watkins elected to use his time out, and following a few stern comments, the Blue Devils (10-11-2, 5-11-0 NCHA, 2-9-0 WIAC) got down to business.
Stout got on the scoreboard with a power play goal at 16:43 in the first period, just as the Eau Claire player was preparing to leave the box, when Garrett Grimstad (Sr, Rochester, Minn) scored. He was assisted by Kevin O'Donnell (Jr, Stoughton).
The Blue Devils pulled to within one goal in the second period when Mike Hartviksen (Jr, Thunder Bay, Ont) threw the puck towards the net and found the back of the twine at the 5:58 mark. Hartviksen was assisted by Grimstad and Zach Vierling (So, Coon Rapids, Minn).
Stout tied the game on O'Donnell's unassisted goal at the 13:18 mark of the second period.
Blue Devil goalie Nick Hopper (Sr, Culver City, Calif) finished the game with 21 saves, while the Blugolds' Brandon Stephenson had 24 saves.
