College Athlete Check-In: Austin Byrd

Continuing our College Athlete Check-In. Today we catch up with Wisconsin Badger swimmer Austin Byrd. The Chippewa Falls grad earned a top 10 finish in the 200 yard backstroke at the Big Ten Championships last year as a freshman. In 2011 and 2012, Byrd won back to back state titles in the 100 backstroke. The first Cardinal to get a scholarship to Madison, Byrd says he made the right choice becoming a Badger.

"We train more than I ever did, and that really keeps me busy along with school. I've learned some good time management," says Byrd.

Not only has the work-out volume increased since his Chi hi days, the sophomore believes all adjustments to his training are leading to faster times.

I'm getting stronger with lift, I didn't lift before going down to Madison so that has definitely helped. Plus, I believe that we have the best coaching staff in the country so technique is definitely improving a lot, same with my swimming and endurance," adds Byrd.
