Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team talk about state championship #2

The Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team captured the WIAA state championship this past Saturday in Madison beating Verona 6-1. For the Old Abes, it was their second state title under coach Mike Schwengler, the first coming back in 2008. On Monday, coach Schwengler, captain Brady Bollinger, last weekend's top player of the tournament Jake Bresser and his linemate Charley Graaskamp were in studio to talk to Sports Director Bob Gallaher about winning another championship for Memorial.
Coach Mike Schwengler says, "To me it was an accumulation of everything we've done, not just this year but in year's prior. And we've always said, we've never seen a group of kids play a perfect game, and you're right, it was as close to perfect as you could have. They did exactly what we told them to do from the drop of the puck to the end of the whistles and everyone was in it, everyone was together and the fans were fantastic and it was a great experience."
Brady Bollinger talked about closing out his four-year high school career with a championship, "Hockey at the high school level is extremely special because you have such a close group of guys and you work so hard during the off-season and during the four months during the season. the state tournament, the state title is just something that you can't even put words to."

At 10 pm, Eau Claire Memorial juniors' Charley Graaskamp and Jake Bresser explained that once the team bought into the "Old Abe Hockey" team concept, everything began to click.
Graaskamp says, "We definitely struggled at the beginning of the year, kind of playing our own way, Coach definitely stressed that if we are going to do this, we really need to come together and play Old Abe Hockey. And once we all bought into that we really started rolling."
Added Bresser, "Old Abe hockey is not too finessey, it's all about keeping it simple, defensive hockey, because you can't get down to the offensive zone without being calm and composed in your D-zone, we just tried to keep it simple, at the beginning of the year, we got away from that, more of a personal level but once we got back to Old Abe hockey we started rolling from there and turned our season around."
