Milwaukee rink to host speedskating competition

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee ice rink will host a World Cup qualifier for long track speedskating.

The U.S. Single Distance Long Track Championships will be held at the Pettit National Ice Center from Friday through Sunday.

The top speedskaters will compete for spots on the U.S. Fall World Cup team that will travel to Europe and Asia.

Ryan Shimabukuro, U.S. Speedskating Long Track Team Coach, says it's the first important competition for U.S. skaters this season.

Shani Davis, a 2010 Olympic medalist, is expected to compete on the men's side along with Wisconsin residents and fellow Olympians Tucker Fredricks and Mitch Whitmore.

The event is free and open to the public.
