Volleyball Falls Short to 13th-Ranked UW-Whitewater

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Despite winning the first two sets, the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team dropped the final three as 13th-ranked UW-Whitewater won 3-2 in the McPhee Physical Education Center .

Eau Claire had little trouble with the Warhawks in the opening two sets, winning respective sets 25-17 and 25-18. The Blugolds were down early in both sets but finished strong to win both sets.

In the third set, Whitewater jumped out to a 9-2 lead but the Blugolds rallied and eventually got up 23-20. But the Warhawks scored five straight points to win the set 25-23.

In the fourth set, the Blugolds struggled to get going and Whitewater built a 17-6 lead before Eau Claire scored four points to close within seven (17-10). From there, Whitewater outscored the Blugolds 8-5 to win the set 25-15.

In the final set, the teams started off going back and forth until a 5-5 tie. The Warhawks then went on a 6-1 run to get up 11-6 and while Eau Claire fought back, the deficit was too much to overcome as Whitewater won 15-12 to take the match 3-2.

The Blugolds finished outhitting the Warhawks .333-.269 and had 61 kills to 57 for the Warhawks.

Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) led the match with 25 kills, a career high, as she hit .310.

Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) recorded 17 digs to lead Eau Claire and Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) finished with 53 set assists to lead the match.

Eau Claire is now 9-7 on the season and 1-2 in WIAC play. Whitewater improves to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Wednesday the Blugolds will be in action in St. Paul, Minn. They face Northwestern College (Minn.) at 6 p.m. and will follow with a match against St. Thomas (Minn.) at 8 p.m.
