WIAA state wrestling preview

By  |

One of the most exciting spectacles of high school sports in Wisconsin will get underway later this week with the WIAA state wrestling tournament in Madison. The individual wrestlers will take to the mats at the Kohl Center looking to bring home a state championship. Earlier Monday, our SportScene staff stopped by Eau Claire North and Menomonie.
Eric Peissig, Mustangs Senior 195-lbs, "Just redeem myself from last year, came off a tough loss last year so just take it one match at a time and do what I've done all season. The one match I won at state so far, I got a take down in it so I think take down is the most important thing and then turning people on top and getting those bonus points, you know so you can kind of blow a match open and get ahead by a lot."
Logan Schlough, Mustangs Sophomore 132-lbs, "I'm just real excited to make it down there. It's my first time so it will be a good experience. There's just a lot of people down there so it's really loud and exciting so just gotta stay calm."
Justin Peterson, Huskies Freshman 106-lbs. "It's a pretty big honor, pretty impressive I think. Hopefully I can place, I have a chance of being in the championship if I wrestle real hard."
Tyler Deacon, Huskies Sophomore 113-lbs. "I knew it could happen because I knew that with all the hard work that I put in, with all the kids that were in my brackets but I knew that I could get down there and now I'm just hoping to place. Obviously everybody wants to be a state champion but I'm just looking to place, top 6 would be sweet, but in the future I would like to be state champion eventually."
