For more than three decades, UW-Eau Claire's been home to something other than a typical summer camp, where fun and games are only part of the experience.
UW-Eau Claire's version of the Wisconsin Youth Success Program camp runs for five weeks every summer since 1980. The camp provides children ages 10-16 with a chance to hone their athletic skills through a variety of sports activities. WYSP also features educational sessions designed to help kids improve their abilities in the classroom.
In the past, UW-Eau Claire's WYSP was a three-time winner of the Silvio O. Conte Award, given to the nation's top program, and is known as one of the best in the country. However, UW-Eau Claire's WYSP has been operating without federal funds for four years, putting the camp's future in jeopardy earlier this year.
WYSP Activities Director Lisa Schuetz says the program's sponsors, along with donations, have kept the camp running, something she hopes will continue in the future. Schuetz is encouraging parents and other members of the community to donate money to the camp.
