The Eau Claire Regis boys basketball team got quite the performance last week from junior Billy Wampler. The guard was just shy of a record setting night and for that SportScene13's Jenn Chapman honors him as our Gordy's Athlete of the Week.
"It's a really great feeling to know that the guys want you to succeed. If you're going to be doing something good, and they believe in you and they want to get you the ball and they want you to break individual records, no matter who it is," says Wampler regarding his teammates after he scored 48 points in last week's win against Stanley-Boyd.
"He adds a lot of variety to this team. He can fill the shoes when others can't," says teammate Patrick Reardon.
"He looks for his teammates when he gets double. And a lot of teams focus on him so a lot of people are always open and he looks for other people to score too, not just him, but when he's hot you gotta get him the ball," adds teammate Logan Rohrsceib.
Wampler was just two points away from the Regis individual scoring record of 50, and four points away from the city record of 52.
"I'm never really looking for individual awards, we're more looking towards what we can do as a team, more of getting to state or going far in playoffs, or a sectional final run, something like that," says Wampler.
"But individual goals will always come with that, whether that means me, or Patrick, or Logan Rohrschieb. We always try to work together to get the best out of our teammates," he adds.
The Ramblers got off to a 1-4 start this season but have since turned a corner.
"Well especially this season, anything can happen. We see a lot of the other teams. Their unexpected losses and we know anything can happen," says Reardon.
"Defense has been a really big thing for us in the last practices and we're trying to come together and hopefully make playoff run. Even though we're 6-6, we have the talent to compete with anyone," says Wampler.
