Brendan Kwick isn't afraid of heights.

"It's a rush when you go through the air. It's kind of like a black out when you're going through it. Just your muscle memory just kicks in when you're going through the air in the beginning. And then on the way down it's jumping off a high board coming down," says Kwick.

2013 has been one of the snowiest winters on record, forcing athletes to train indoors, but that hasn't stopped Eau Claire Memorial's Brendan Kwick from reaching new heights.

Kwick broke the Old Abes pole vaulting record with a jump of 13 feet 9 inches.

"I could just feel it that day when I got in there.," says Kwick. "I got to 13'6 and I was just, adrenaline was pumping and just got me over the 13'9."

Brendan has come a long ways since his first attempt.

"No heighted my first time, completely no heighted. Then after that got 9'6 on my second vault and then just passed and just keep working on up past that," adds Kwick.

"The thing that has set him apart is he has really become a student of the event," says coach Ken Montanye. "He could coach this event himself and in fact he does help me quite often with some of the people that are new to pole vaulting."

And now the sky is the limit.

"Well I definitely want to expand my, the school record. And just keep going with that, working on PR's. And want to get to state this year and make a good running there," says Kwick.
