ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Bryce Kamenick, great in goal for Huskies

The Eau Claire North hockey team has struggled in recent years but is turning the corner. The Huskies have to give some credit to this week's Gordy's Athlete of the Week, goalie Bryce Kamenick.

"Just them knowing that, maybe they do make a mistake, there's someone on the back end to clean it up a bit. And he keeps us competitive in a lot of games that maybe we shouldn't be," says Huskies coach Jordan Fish.

Senior captain, Bryce Kamenick is a four year starter for the Huskies, averaging over 40 saves a game in his career.

"It's big, he's one of the top goalies in our conference, I believe. And he's been that way for almost all four years we've been together. He's just a brickwall back there," says defenseman Sam Suckow.

"Been on the other side of the ice where I get 5 or 6 shots a game and that's not fun. So when I get 50 shots, 60 shots sometime, it's just a really big challenge," says Kamenick.

In Kamenick's first 3 seasons, the Huskies only won a total of 5 games. This year they are 2-3 with Bryce serving as a constant force.

"He was a freshman through a senior during some of the most down times of North hockey, but never once has he wavered. Such a strong support system for those young kids coming up," says Fish.

His offense is stuck facing him in practice.

"It's awful to be honest, because you can never score really. He makes us better though and he tells us and coaches us what to do because he's seen it all," says forward Tyler Voegeli.

"It's fun to make the guys frustrated every once in awhile when they can't score on you," adds Kamenick.

The 6'3 goalie has re-written the North record books and is hoping to play juniors.

"I want to go play at the next level, wherever that may be. I don't know where that is right now but I'm just working hard every day to get to the next step," says Kamenick.

"You know he's not going to be a kid that causes any extra work. He's gonna show up, he's gonna do what's asked of him, he's gonna give everything that he has all the time," adds Fish.
