ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dominic Berlin wins while losing this summer

"It's not just about us, it's about the city of Eau Claire and youth baseball," says Dominic Berlin.

Eau Claire North grad, Dominic Berlin says the Legion's success is culmination of great coaching over the years. Berlin is proof with a 1.85 era over 48 innings, throwing 37 strike outs.

"He's always a person who gives all he's got. He's high intensity. He just sets the tone of 100% all the time and that's what it takes to get the job done on the mound," says teammate Sam Hurt.

Berlin feels more prepared to be front and center after winning the NFL's Punt, Pass, and Kick contest in 2010.

"Athlete isn't necessarily one sport, it's being well rounded," says Berlin. "It definitely helps being on the big stage in other sports, being able to succeed there."

Wanting to play college ball, Berlin knew he had to make a change not just to his game but to his fitness level. This spring in a span of four months, Berlin shed 60 pounds, and feels better than ever.

"Now I just need to work at getting bigger and stronger again...more the stronger part," says Berlin. "Being at what I am, between 220 and 230 now...that's where I'd like to be."

"Losing that much weight is a really big feat and he went out and had the dedication to do it," says Hurt. "That really shows everyone that it can be done and by doing that it can just make you a better player."

And now he'll take his game and studies to the next level at UW- La Crosse.

"You're going to school to be a student and that's what you want to succeed at the most. The baseball side of it, they have a great team. They won the WIAC and they have a great team, year in and year out," says Berlin.
