ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Eau Claire North Baseball

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- After starting out the baseball season thirteen and one and undefeated in conference play, Eau Claire North has become one of the best teams in the state. Their success this past week has earned them the title of Athlete of the Week. SportScene 13's Chance Dickman has more.

It's just been one of the seasons so far for the Eau Claire North baseball team, where wins just keep coming their way, each and every game that they play.

Head coach Bob Johnson says, "I think the biggest thing to help us be successful is the way we compete in all situations. And at the current moment right now, we've been doing a pretty good job at making plays, throwing strikes, playing defense when the game's been on the line."

The Huskies have been absolutely dominant from the mound this season, and it's been vital part to the team's success.

Says Johnson, "Great pitching performances by both our left-handers, and they buy into our situational structure during practice and I think it's carried over onto the field." Senior Tyler Fencl adds, "That we have some depth, and the players we have will be able to get out of whatever situation that get's thrown at us."

That situation this week was facing cross town rival, Eau Claire Memorial, and getting two shut-out victories improving their record to 9-0 in the Big Rivers Conference.

Fencl says, "Every year we play them it's fun because we all know each other but once we get into the game, it's our team verse their team. It's really bragging rights for the city."

Coach Johnson realizes the importance of practice and getting big conference victories like the two verse Memorial , but is glad his team embraces having fun while playing the game of baseball.

"The enthusiasm has been fun this year. We obviously spend a lot of time indoors, but this is a team that just seems to want to come in and work hard, and our guys don't seem to have a problem with that. They kind of lead by example," says Johnson.

The 5th ranked Huskies hope their hard work continues to pay off and that maybe a State apperance awaits them at the end of the season. Reporting in Eau Claire, Chance Dickman, for SportScene 13.
