The boys swimming and diving season came to a spectacular end Saturday for Eau Claire Memorial's Alex DeLakis and Chippewa Falls' Austin Byrd as they both had outstanding performances in taking home state titles.
DeLakis picked up right where he left off last year, as he repeated as champion in the 200 yard I-M and then followed that up with a repeat in the 100-yard breaststroke.. He was also a member of the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays that helped Memorial to a school best third place finish.
As for Austin Byrd, after finishing 2nd to DeLakis in the 200 yard I-M, he was able to repeat as the champion in the 100 yard backstroke and was part of the 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay as Chippewa Falls/McDonell finished 8th.
Both swimmers have a lot to be proud of after their performances.\
Austin Byrd: "I am happy, I got all best times, which is awesome. It's kind of bittersweet for my backstroke, I was .16 away from breaking the state record, but I still won and got a best time which is awesome."
Alex DeLakis; " I was happy with all my swims, I did what my body was able to do on this given day and I tried my best out there, I was happy with how I performed. You can't get to big headed about this kind of stuff. Anybody can have a good day, you can have a bad day, anything can happen."
