Appleton East and Watertown play 27 inning softball game

Saturday at the Chippewa Falls Softball Invitational, Appleton East and Watertown played a game for the record books.

In a game that started at 11am and ended around 5pm, Appleton East beat Watertown 3-2 in 27 innings. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations' record book, the game is tied for the 10 longest softball game ever. That would also make it the longest game in Wisconsin history.

The game was tied 2-2 in the top of the 27th when Appleton East's Sara Hagaman drove the ball past the shortstop to score a run and give the Patriots the lead. Then in the bottom of the 27th, Tiereny Wittman got the final out to seal the victory.

For those who are curious, the longest game on record was played in California back in 1983 between Huntington Beach Ocean View and Huntington Beach Marina. it went 35 innings, with Ocean View winning 1-0.

And to no surprise in a record-breaking game, the last play of this game could've also gone either way. In fact, many fans right there along the right field line are certain that final Watertown batter/runner was safe, which would've allowed a runner in scoring position to score! Regardless, congratulations to all the players. It's a worn-out cliche, but there were no losers in this epic contest.
