Memorial Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime at State Quarterfinals

Eau Claire Memorial held a two goal lead over Brookfield Central/East, but the Stars scored two goals in the second period to tie the game, then in overtime scored the game winner as the Old Abes fall 3-2 at the state quarterfinals.

The Old Abes would strike first as Jake Sparger fired a long shot just past center ice for the first goal of the game with 6:50 left in the first period.

Early second period Memorial would add to their lead as Jacob Bresser fired in a goal to give the Old Abes a 2-0 lead. That is when Brookfield East/Central would rally.

The Stars came back with two late goals in the period to tie the game up. Second goal came with six attackers on the ice for the Stars as Memorial was called for a delayed penalty. It was 2-2 going to the 3rd period.

After a scoreless third period, the game headed into overtime. Two minutes into the extra session, the Stars P.J. Corbett was able to beat the Old Abes goalie Dan Hanna and score the game winner.

This marks the third straight state tournament appearance for Eau Claire Memorial that has ended with an overtime loss.
