Rice Lake's Wally Ellenson is a two-time WIAA state high jump champion after capturing the Division 1 title on Friday in La Crosse. Ellenson, who cleared 7-feet, 1-inch at last week's WIAA regional at New Richmond won today's state meet with a jump of 6-feet, 10-inches, but missed out on all three of his attempts at 7-feet, 2-inches which would have been the highest jump in state history. Ellenson also claimed fourth place in the long jump and will have another chance at a medal on Saturday when he competes in the triple jump.
In other action, great first day for New Richmond's Kat Keller as she wins her Division 1 100-meter dash heat and also qualifies in the 200 and 400 meter runs. In Division 2 shot put, Altoona's Kali Belonga battling injuries, still able to muster a throw of 38-feet, 2 1/4 inches, that was good for 4th place. And in Division 3, 1600 meter run, great race for Chippewa Falls McDonell's Nick Zander, just falls short of a state title to Prairie School's Andres Tineo Paz, Zander 2nd with a time of 4-minutes, 21.4 seconds.
