WIAA close to moving state basketball tournaments to Green Bay

The WIAA Board of Control approved a recommendation earlier this week to enter into a five-year agreement with the Resch Center in Green Bay as soon as next year if the University of Wisconsin is unable to accommodate the state boys and girls basketball tournaments. Seeking a change in venue has become necessary because of conflicts with UW Athletics schedule next year and beyond.
WI AA Executive Director Dave Anderson talked about how UW has forced their hand. "It is important that we put them into attractive venues at a time when our fan base interest is at its peak and we think that peak is during the traditional times we've held those tournaments. That 2nd and 3rd week of March before the rush of the NCAA's and spring break diminishes high school fan attendance. Bittersweet because of the long friendships and traditions but on the other hand, the potential excitement of a wonderful one like the Resch Center being available on the days and dates and weeks that our membership feels are optimum for high school basketball."

I do not like this really, hopefully some way will be found to keep the tournament in Madison but I can see where the WIAA is and can hopefully make this situation work. I do not understand why Milwaukee did not make a bid, maybe they thought that it would be too expensive or something so they would not get it. Milwaukee has different venues to host the tournament from the Bradly Center and the US Cellular Center, Milwaukee would have offered Museum's, Restaurants, Parking, Hotels, as well as other hospitality items. The Green Bay location does seem nice, and the Green Bay Packers do like accommodations to partner for events outside of the football season.

I can see where the WIAA is coming from. In this part of the state, Green Bay is about the same distance, if not a little further than Madison. Conflicting schedules have been going on with the Kohl Center a while. I also did not think it was fair when the Girls would play in the Alliance Center, but the Boys were able to play in the Kohl Center. I did like the energy down around state street, with all the parents and fans walking around, Green Bay is different, but I hope that the tournament will still be memorable for the kids. It is too bad that the Field House is not what it once was, because that was always fun. UW doesn't even use the Field House for basketball anymore, they use it for wrestling and volleyball, both that have a minimal fan base. I hope that UW find a way to work something out with the Kohl Center, but it appears they do not view the state tournament as a priority.
