A Big Day for DeLakis and Byrd

The boys swimming and diving season came to a spectacular end Saturday for Eau Claire Memorial's Alex DeLakis and Chippewa Falls' Austin Byrd as they both had outstanding performances in taking home state titles.

SPORTSCENE 13 for Saturday, February 18th

It was an exciting day of sports action, starting at the prep level with State swimming. Eau Claire Memorial's Alex DeLakis and Chippewa Falls's Austin Byrd were the stars down at the UW Natatorium. DeLakis defended his titles in the 200-yard I.M. and 100-yard breaststroke, while Byrd won his 2nd straight title in the 100-yard backstroke. As team, Eau Claire Memorial/North finished 3rd, the best in school history. In Sectional wrestling, Izzy Balsiger of Chippewa Falls remained undefeated and punched his ticket back to state with another victory. At the Zorn Arena, the UW-Eau Claire women clinched a share of the WIAC title with a win over Stevens Point, while the men ended their season with an upset of the 12th ranked Pointers. WIAA close to moving state basketball tournaments to Green Bay

The WIAA Board of Control approved a recommendation earlier this week to enter into a five-year agreement with the Resch Center in Green Bay as soon as next year if the University of Wisconsin is unable to accommodate the state boys and girls basketball tournaments.

In a special ASSIGNMENT 13 report, "Danger on the Ice", WEAU Sports Director Bob Gallaher looks at the recent injury across the border in Minnesota that left a high school hockey player paralyzed because of a check from behind hit. We hear from that teen and his family, plus we show you rules right here in Wisconsin that could change, because of that hit.

Sportscene 13 For Saturday, Feb.4th

In the college ranks, UW-Eau Claire played host to UW-River Falls as they honored Ken Anderson. In prep basketball action, Chippewa Falls hosted Rice Lake in a battle of the top two boys teams in the Big Rivers Conference. Plus BRC swimming and and wrestling. Ten local prep standouts sign national letters of intent

National Letter of Intent signing day is always a big day for high school athletes, and that was certainly the case Wednesday as ten prep standouts from Western Wisconsin made it official as to where they will play collegiately.

Chi Hi's Izzy Balsiger, prep athlete of the week

After capturing the Big Rivers title last week, the Chippewa Falls wrestling team figures to be a force to be reckoned with when the WIAA regionals begin next weekend. Sportscene 13 For Friday, January 27th

It was busy night for high school basketball and Sportscene 13 has all action. On the boy's side, Chippewa Falls headed to Menomonie, Memorial hosted Hudson and Rice Lake traveled to La Crosse Logan.
