A cool start to the weekend fishing opener

Lake Wissota, Wis "Yeah thanks guys, here at Lake Wissota right now there's no ice, it's all clear so you know there's going to be a lot of people getting out here this weekend to take advantage of that and catch the big one."

"Well it's going to start out quite, we won't have a foot of snow on the ground this year it looks like and that's a good thing."

We all know it's been a long cold winter.

"Everything's behind, everything's late this year.

Mike Buroker owner of Buroker's Taxidermy Bait and Tackle says the colder temperatures have made business a little slow.

"The phones have been quite, people are well aware of the conditions out there, they don't have to call me and ask."

This past winter brought record cold and ice to the lakes of Wisconsin. And with some lakes to the north still with some ice on them this weekends' fishing opener might be a bit chilly. But Heath Benike with Wisconsin DNR says it's not just the ice and cold that fishermen should be aware of this weekend but with the recent rain we've received and the continued snow melt to the north some local water ways are flooded.

"The Chippewa river is flooding pretty high right now, I would definitely be careful if you're going out on the river. The big lakes like Lake Wissota, Lake Holcombe should be fine. You should be able to get out on those flowages and fish."

But despite the cool start to the season Buroker is optimistic, and he has some advice for anglers itching to get out on the lake.

"Just be patient, and hope for warm weather."

"And this weekend's forecast looks to be pretty decent. We'll see some clouds maybe some drizzle on Saturday, but Sunday plenty of sunshine, and of course those warmer temperatures. On Lake Wissota, for WEAU 13 News I'm Drew Williams."
