The emerald ash borer has been detected in western Wisconsin.

The small destructive beetle is responsible for killing millions of ash trees all around the nation.

It has been sighted in the La Crosse County, and recreational director Jay Odegaard says it may be just a matter of time before there is an outbreak.

“When it gets here and hits hard were going to lose a lot of trees,” said Odegaard.

The city has decided to host a workshop Tuesday, May 15th to answer all questions people might have about the bug.

The workshop will be held at the Black River Beach Neighborhood Center 1433 Rose St. from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm.

Small “D” shaped holes in the bark, and many shoots coming from the sides of the tree are signs that it may be infected.

The emerald ash borer will invade any type of ash tree.

In the La Crosse County it’s estimated that 35% of the trees are ash trees.

Once a tree is infested it can take up to 3 years to die. The standard way to treat an infested tree is to chop it down and to dispose of the wood.
