New generation of Wisconsin State Troopers

(WEAU) - Over 130 miles of interstate is covered by the Wisconsin State Patrol, and it's excited to have more troopers patrolling the roads again.

"We haven't had a class since 2008, so this is an opportunity for us to really enhance public safety and highway safety in the area," said Commander of the Northwest Region State Patrol, Jeffrey Frenette.

After being shorthanded last year by 9 troopers due to deployment and retirement, Frenette says this will be a positive change for the surrounding area.

"The field training will cover every aspect from motorists to crash investigations, criminal interdiction, writing citations and warnings,” said Frenette.

Just one week prior, officers trained for 23 weeks at the Fort McCoy Academy.

"It’s basically a boot camp, it teaches everything from fire arms and emergency vehicle operation, defensive arrest tactics, chemical testing," said Justin Arnold, New State Trooper.

New trooper and past U.S Navy Lieutenant Justin Arnold is excited to start patrolling in Dunn County.

"I'm really excited to get on the road and actually put that stuff to use and learn the actual field application," said Arnold.

The new troopers have come from areas such as Bloomer and Barron County.

There even is one from Texas and one from Canada.

"I'm going to have one assigned to the Eau Claire County, I'll have four assigned to the Dunn County, and we'll have two assigned to Jackson County and our inspector is going to be assigned to the Hudson scale and St. Croix County," said Lieutenant of Wisconsin State Patrol, Jeff Lorenz.

The State Patrol won't need to spend any more money to employ the troopers, because it already has the equipment the troopers need.
