Rescuers simulate farm accidents

(WEAU) - According to the National Safety Council, agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in the U.S.

Although it was a day of heat, it was a day of learning for local firefighters and EMTS.

"The University Wisconsin Extension received in Dunn County a grant to support farm safety activities in the county," said Katie Sternweis, UW-Extension.

About 30 participants from Durand, Elk Mound, Mondovi, Sand Creek and Colfax elected to spend their Saturdays to learn how to deal with tractor rollovers and machine rescues.

Firefighters and local EMS Responders even completed a grain bin simulation to help determine on how to get someone out if they were to ever get stuck.

"It’s going to be some real great training, and we're glad everybody decided to come down, it’s training that's needed," said Chief John Entorf, Menomonie Fire Department.

Sand Creek Firefighter Heather Harsh says she never knew how to remove someone from farming equipment but finally got the chance.

"My first instinct was ok use the spreaders the cutters and cut into the auger in there. He explained no you have to go dismantle the chain. Different things like that has been very helpful to be knowledgeable with the equipment and know how you take it apart to extricate that patient safer and cause less damage," said Heather Harsh, Sand Creek Firefighter.

The Menomonie Fire Chief managed the patient stabilization station and says each exercise was helpful.

"This is a little bit more in depth, you have to watch a little more of what you’re doing but it’s all safety based," said Entorf.

"We want to make the emergency responders are trained and prepared to come across accidents they may come to on the farm," said Sternweis.
