The University of Wisconsin men's hockey team (16-17-7, 11-12-5 WCHA) dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to No. 1 seeded North Dakota (28-10-4, 16-11-1 WCHA) in the NCAA Midwest Regional final on Sunday night at the Kohl Center. Skating in the final game of their careers were seniors Davis Drewiske (Hudson, Wis.), Josh Engel (Rice Lake, Wis.), Matthew Ford (West Hills, Calif.) and Kyle Klubertanz (Sun Prairie, Wis.).
The Badgers rode a two-goal lead into the third period behind two special teams scores. Wisconsin’s first goal came from the stick of NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team sophomore Jamie McBain (Faribault, Minn.) at 5:38 in the second period. As the UW’s power play was winding down, senior captain Drewiske sent a pass across the blue line to Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C.). The freshman converted to McBain across the slot who scored over Jean-Philippe Lamoureux’s left side. The goal came just seconds after the power play expired.
Freshman defenseman Cody Goloubef helped the Badgers jump to a two-goal advantage on the power-play at 19:21 in the frame. The Oakville, Ontario native fired a slapshot from the blue line that went just right of the net all the way to the boards for a big rebound. The puck came up and hit the back of Lamoureux’s left arm and bounced into the net for the score.
Wisconsin saw its lead diminish when UND scored twice in less than 60 seconds to tie the game at two. Ryan Kaip netted North Dakota’s first goal at 3:33 of the third, with assists to Matt Franklin and Matt Watkins. At 4:20 in the stanza, Ryan Duncan’s shot hit the pipe and bounced into the net over Badger goaltender Shane Connelly (Cheltenham, Pa.). Robbie Bina and T.J. Oshie were credited with the assist on the goal.
North Dakota scored on its second shot in overtime, winning the game at 1:47 of the extra frame. Andrew Kozek recorded the goal, his 18th of the season.
The Badgers outshot North Dakota 43-31 in the game. Connelly stopped 28 shots for Wisconsin, finishing the season with a 15-16-5 record. UND’s Lamoureux had 41 saves while boosting his record to 27-10-4 on the season.
Wisconsin was officially 1-for-4 on the power play, although one of the UW’s goals was scored as a power play expired. The Badgers held UND scoreless on all three of their man advantages.
The NCAA Midwest Regional winner North Dakota will advance to the Frozen Four on April 10-12 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., joining Michigan, Notre Dame and Boston College.
