Legendary Green Bay Packers receiver Max McGee was investigated by the FBI for illegal gambling after his playing career was over in the early 1970s.

Records released to The Associated Press under the federal Freedom of Information Act show the FBI investigated him for several months in late 1972 through September 1973.

But the records show the agency dropped the case due to a lack of evidence.

The fun-loving, hard-partying McGee is beloved by Packers fans not only for his skills on the field but also his flamboyant, free-spirited lifestyle and years as an announcer for the Packer Radio Network.

He died in October at the age of 75 after falling off the roof of his Minneapolis home while clearing leaves.

The FBI turned over its files on McGee at the AP's request. Files become public record once the subject has died.
