Health survey returns to Chippewa County

(WEAU) – The survey of the Health of Wisconsin also known as 'SHOW' is back in the Stanley area.

It hopes to gather data from people in Chippewa County, which will be used on a statewide level to measure people's health conditions.

Since 2008, "SHOW" has been gathering data through physical exams and questionnaires.

The survey, modeled after the Center for Disease Control's National Survey, determines information on a state level.

"Data are being used to help inform public health research and scientific research around people's health,” said Kristen Malecki, Assistant Director of Survey of Health of Wisconsin in a phone interview.

The survey takes 3 ½ hours to complete and those randomly surveyed must be 21 - 74 years of age.

Then out of the 36 households selected, 'SHOW' hopes to receive data from at least 14 people.

“We ask people's activities, behaviors and neighborhoods and communities where they live and their perception of their communities as healthy place to live,” said Malecki.

The Executive Director of Public Health in Chippewa County feels the survey will help determine if programs and services are making a difference.

"It allows us to not just guess about how things are going but to tell are they getting better or are they getting worse," said Jean Durch, Executive Director of Public Health in Chippewa County.

Meanwhile people living in Stanley also agree and say the survey is doing positive things for the community.

`"I think that it's probably a good thing, there's a very large population of seniors in the area,” said Anastasia Rogalski of Stanley.

"Yea I think you get a better perspective of what's going on when you get different age groups," said Joe Cigan Sr. of Stanley.
